Preserve the character of your historic home with Archwood Millwork’s exterior restoration expertise. From windows and doors to corbels and brackets, we recreate and restore architectural features, honoring the craftsmanship of the past. Invest in the tradition of valuing beauty and craftsmanship, enhancing both your home’s first impression and its community standing.

Character defining features of an historic home are often displayed on the exterior facade. The exterior is your homes first impression and contributes to the character and value of its community. By investing in the preservation of your historic home you are contributing to a tradition of valuing beauty and craftsmanship that can be enjoyed by all. Windows, doors and features like corbels, brackets, drip edge and fascia are often removed, damaged or compromised. We can recreate all of these building components to replicate their original design and character. We can also help you reimagine what might have been lost. We do this work in the spirit of craftsmanship that originally built these homes, using the tried and true methods of construction that have stood the test of time.

Interior Detailing

Rediscover your home’s original beauty with Archwood Millwork’s interior detailing services. Sometimes the original character of a home is lost to decades of careless renovation. With our knowledge and expertise of the relevant architecture of this region, we can help you reimagine what might have been the original character and beauty of your home and bring it back to life. This might include designing and installing new wainscoting, mouldings, cabinetry, doors, or fine details such as rosettes. Archwood can replicate almost any historic moulding profile, or design a new original profile. Consider reviving your original hardware with a fresh polish, repairing loose balusteres and railings, or fixing cracked panels on interior doors.

Timber Framing

Explore the historical construction method of timber framing with Archwood Millwork. From small additions to gazebos and guest suites, we bring back this enduring aesthetic. Honor tradition by appreciating the natural beauty of exposed timber, blending durability with a revival of a classic construction style.

Timber framing is a historical method of construction. It is the original wood framed house and was made by joining large pieces of timber with solid mechanical connections, ie. intricate joinery, much like traditional furniture, built with interlocking framing members. A good example of its durability is the prevalence of 150 some-odd year old barns that dot the rural landscape of this country, still standing square and plumb almost entirely unmaintained. This style of building has seen a revival in the last 30 years and has become a popular aesthetic in its own right. Traitionally the interior of the timber frame would have been hidden by interior plaster. But these days it is often left exposed for the occupants to appreciate the natural beauty of its materials and the quality of its construction. Consider honoring this tradition in small additions such as gazebos, sheds, studios, and guest suites.

Custom Windows & Doors

Preserve the authenticity of your building with Archwood Millwork’s custom windows and doors. Contrary to industry propaganda, historic wooden windows contribute to both aesthetic and environmental benefits. We specialize in replicating historic designs or creating modern windows with a classic touch, ensuring your home maintains its character for generations to come.

Windows and doors are an important and character defining feature of any old building. Any building that retains its original sashes and glazing thereby gains in integrity and significance.

There is a lot of propoganda and general misunderstanding around traditional wood windows being propogated by the replacement window and door industry.

They will say you are making a wise financial investment in your house by being “green” (saving energy and the environment), as well as improving the appearance and making your house easier to sell. In reality, outfitting historic buildings with modern replacement windows often results in a mechanical, contrived, or uniformly sterile appearance. Nuances in molding profiles, shadow, line, and color of windows, along with quality and appearance of the glass, contribute greatly to the overall building aesthetic and generally emulate the stylistic details of the building as a whole. Even what might seem like small changes in these elements has a noticeable and usually detrimental effect on many historic facades. Worse, when historic windows are replaced, this authenticity is lost forever. Something else to consider is the long term performance of these products. While manufacturers’ warranties have been lengthened in the past few years, they still pale in comparison to the actual performance life exhibited in historic windows, which can reach 100 – 200 years, often with just minimal maintenance. Opting to repair your original wooden windows and doors contributes greatly to the reduction of environmental costs and conserves the embodied energy of your home.

Whether its restoring your homes original doors and windows, or building new ones, Archwood can provide you with a quality product and service. If new windows are needed, Archwood has you covered. We can faithfully replicate any original historic design, make hybrid windows with modern functions and classic design, or build you a modern window with contemperary design.
